Using MMS to Supplement Solar Wind Monitors
Sanjay Chepuri, Ph.D.
Abstract: Solar wind data propagated from the L1 point is an important tool for scientists studying Earth’s magnetosphere, especially as input for simulations and space weather forecasting. In this work, we discuss the reliability of that data and how we can use observations from satellites orbiting Earth, namely MMS in this case, as an additional source to improve observations. First, we will compare how well L1 monitors agree with each other at different points in their orbit and then compare the L1 observations to simultaneous solar wind observations by MMS just outside the bow shock. We will then present a case study of a solar storm and show how the different data sources produce drastically different simulation results. Finally, we will discuss how future work can incorporate intermediate observations to further our understanding of how the solar wind evolves between L1 and Earth.
